Cardiac troponin I (CTI), a cardiac enzyme, is a reliable biomarker for heart damage. It is a protein that regulates the contractility of the heart and moderates calcium interaction with myocin and actin in the heart muscle. Actin and myocin work together in the production and utilization of energy in the heart muscles. When these fibers (actin) and protein (myocin which is used in cellular energy production) get damaged CTI increases.
